Join one of New Zealand’s leading community concert bands

Are you passionate about music and eager to inspire musicians of all ages and abilities? The Manukau Concert Band is seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic Musical Director to lead us into our next exciting chapter, commencing January 2026.

About the Role

As Musical Director, you will be at the heart of our band, shaping our musical direction, developing players’ skills, and bringing our performances to life. We rehearse weekly in Howick, Auckland, on Monday nights, and perform regularly at community events and local concerts.

The role involves two to three hours a week of rehearsal time, another hour or so a week of preparation and planning, and leading the band at concerts and events (around 10 performances a year, up to four hours per event), plus preparation for and attendance at the annual NZCBA Festival. An honorarium is paid per quarter.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead weekly rehearsals, ensuring sessions are engaging, productive, and inclusive.
• Ensure that the highest possible musical standards are achieved, both at rehearsals and concerts, consistent with the band’s musical and financial resources.
• Select and arrange suitable repertoire for concerts and events, catering to a range of abilities and musical tastes.
• Prepare the band for public performances, providing clear musical direction and constructive feedback.
• Work collaboratively with the band committee to plan concert programmes and shape the band’s artistic vision.
• Encourage and nurture the development of individual musicians, fostering a supportive and welcoming band environment.
• Engage with the wider community to promote the band and inspire new members to join.

About You

• Experience in conducting, preferably with wind or concert bands.
• Strong leadership and communication skills.
• Enthusiastic, organised, and approachable.
• A genuine commitment to music education and community engagement.
• Based in Auckland, able to attend weekly rehearsals regularly.
