Joining Our Band

We are always on the lookout for new band members, and are happy to hear from players of all ages. Musicians will need to be able to demonstrate at least a grade 5 playing ability. At the moment we are particularly keen to hear from players of the following:

  • clarinet
  • trombone
  • saxophone
  • French horn

If you are interested in joining our band, please email your name and telephone number to Alex at alex@mcb.org.nz and he will call you back to discuss details.

The Band rehearses on Monday evenings at Howick Presbyterian Church, 11 Vincent Street, Howick.

Information for Prospective Members

1.  Rehearsals

Every Monday we rehearse at Howick Presbyterian Church ( Vincent Street and Ridge Road, Howick).  Rehearsals begin at 7:00pm and end at approximately 9:15-9:30 ish.   We do not rehearse beyond our Christmas concert (early December) and resume in late January/early February.

You must bring your own  music stand.

2.  Absences

It is through a high rate of attendance that we can attain excellence musically, so this is a vital part of the expectation of every member.

3.  Events

The band is involved in around 10 concerts each year and the dates are found on the website.    This includes the NZCBA National Concert Bands Festival, a competition held somewhere in the North Island during August/September.  Within this there is a solo and ensemble competition which members can choose to participate in.  During February there is a weekend band camp in the Auckland region.  Dates are published as early as possible.

4.  Uniform

Uniform consists of black top and bottom (individual’s expense) with a green band scarf/tie that provided by the band.  Black shoes, and minimal plain gold or silver jewellery.  Black stands are preferred for concerts.

5.  Subscriptions

Membership in the band costs $75 per year for working members, $50 for students and non working members as at is paid by cash or internet banking into the band bank account.  Partial payments can be made for members who begin part way through a calendar year.

There are additional costs associated with the February camp and the Festival (accommodation, travel and food for two days) which we endeavour to keep to a minimum.   Members who are experiencing financial difficulties are encouraged to speak with the President or any member of the committee.

6.  Philosophy

The philosophy of MCB revolves around making music as a community.  We ask that members attend rehearsals with commitment, that they practice their parts and come to rehearsals prepared, that they support each other in good and not so good times and that they work together as a team to grow their musical skills and their social connections with each other.
